The operator of cheese (the “App”) (the “cheese team”) sets out the following regarding the User information handled in connection with the use of the App. There are three key points: No email addresses or phone numbers are collected. Clips are visible only to people in the same group. You can completely delete your account from within the App at any time.
1. Information collected
| Information | Details | When collected |
|---|---|---|
| Account ID | A random 8-character ID automatically issued by the App. It is not linked to your name or email address. | On first launch |
| Device credentials | A random secret key used to identify the account. It is stored in a secure area of the User's device, and the cheese team's servers keep it only in hashed form. | On first launch and when transferring |
| Display name | A name the User may choose to set (up to 24 characters). | When set |
| Gender and date of birth | The gender (male, female, or other) and date of birth entered on first launch. They are not shown to other Users, including group members. They can be changed in the App under “Account” → “Profile” → “Gender and birthday”. | On first launch and when changed |
| Country/region | The country or region determined from the device's region setting (or, if none is set, its language and time zone). Location data (such as GPS) is not used. | On launch |
| Clips | Videos and photos shot in response to challenges, along with when they were shot, the challenge answered, the time taken to shoot, and any caption added. | When shooting and sending |
| Group information | Groups joined, invite codes, round records, and rank within the group. | When joining and shooting |
| Chat | The text and send time of messages sent, information on quoted clips and rounds, and a record of how far you have read. | When sending and viewing |
| Packs | Sets of challenges created, and their name, description, tags, and visibility. If published, this also includes the display name at the time of creation. | When creating and publishing |
| Report records | The reason for the report, any text attached, a copy of the reported post's content at that time, and the IDs of the reporter and the reported User. | When reporting |
| Block records | Who blocked whom. Not shown to the blocked User. | When blocking |
| Device and connection information | OS type and version, app version, and access time. Kept as server logs. | When connecting |
| Push notification token | A device token used to send notifications, such as when a challenge arrives. Only if notifications are allowed. | When notifications are allowed |
The App does not collect email addresses, phone numbers, names, contacts, or location data. The camera and microphone are used only when shooting, and nothing other than what is shot is sent.
2. Purposes of use
- Providing account features such as identifying, transferring, and deleting accounts
- Delivering challenges, storing clips and showing them within the same group, tallying ranks, and creating recap videos
- Tailoring challenges and special challenges by gender, age, country, and region (in a way that does not identify individuals; used for conditions such as group size and age range)
- Compiling usage figures (as statistics that do not identify individuals, such as the number of people by gender, age group, country, and region)
- Sending notifications about challenge arrivals and results
- Sending and receiving chats and notifications, and applying blocks
- Responding to reports, and reviewing and acting on violations of the Terms (deletion, removal from groups, account suspension, etc.)
- Detecting and preventing misuse (mass account creation, impersonation, brute-forcing transfer codes, etc.)
- Investigating outages, improving quality, and responding to inquiries
Collected information is never used for advertising or provided to advertising businesses.
3. Storage and service providers
To provide the App, the cheese team uses the services of the following companies and entrusts them with storing and processing information to that extent.
| Company | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Supabase, Inc. | Account authentication, database, server processing |
| Cloudflare, Inc. | Storing and delivering clips (videos and photos), protecting connections |
| Expo (650 Industries, Inc.) | Delivering push notifications, distributing the App |
| Apple Inc. / Google LLC | Distributing the App, relaying push notifications (for Google, including Firebase Cloud Messaging) |
KLIPY. When you search for GIFs or stickers in the recap video editor, your search terms, along with the IP address, device type, and other data that accompany the connection, are sent directly from your device to KLIPY (KLIPY, Inc.). The cheese team's servers do not relay them. KLIPY's handling of this information is governed by its own privacy policy.
These companies' servers may be located outside Japan. Through its contracts with and settings for each company, the cheese team ensures that information is handled in line with this Policy.
4. Provision to third parties
User information is not provided to third parties except in the following cases.
- With the User's own consent
- When required by law, or upon a lawful request from a public authority such as a court or the police
- When necessary to protect a person's life, body, or property and it is difficult to obtain the User's consent
- When provided in connection with a business succession (even then, it will be handled within the scope of this Policy)
5. Visibility
Clips. Shown only to Users who have joined the same group. There is no public timeline or search. The storage is set to private, and each time a clip is shown it is accessed through a signed URL with an expiration time. However, the cheese team cannot prevent other Users in the group from recording or sharing their screen, so please do not shoot anything you don't want others to see.
Chat. Group chats are shown only to participants of the same group, and one-on-one chats only to the other person. The cheese team does not view the content, except as required by law and when reviewing a post after receiving a report. End-to-end encryption is not used.
Packs. For packs published to “Community challenges”, the name, description, tags, included challenges, and the creator's display name can be viewed by all Users of the App and appear in search results. If you don't want a pack to be public, choose sharing by share code instead.
6. Retention period
- Account information (including gender, date of birth, and country/region) and clips: kept until the account is deleted.
- Transfer codes: invalidated 10 minutes after issue, or when used or revoked, and not kept afterward.
- Chats: kept until your account or the other person's account is deleted. You can unsend your own messages in the App at any time (the text is erased; only a record that it was unsent remains).
- Report records: kept even after the reported post is deleted, so that the handling history can be traced.
- Server access logs: deleted within 30 days as a rule.
7. User rights (access, correction, deletion, export)
Because the App holds no registration information, Users can do all of the following themselves, directly within the App.
- Access and export: Contact us at the address listed on the Support page, including your account ID. The cheese team will send you a list of the information it holds.
- Correction: You can change your display name, gender, and date of birth at any time (the icon at the top left of the camera screen → Profile → Name, or Gender and birthday).
- Deletion: From the icon at the top left of the camera screen → “Delete account” → “Delete account”, your account and all of your clips are deleted immediately. This cannot be undone. Data may remain in backups for a certain period after deletion, but it is not used in normal operation and is erased in due course.
If you cannot open the App, contact us at the address listed on the Support page, including your account ID. If the ID cannot be confirmed, we may be unable to help, as we cannot verify your identity.
8. Security
- All communication is encrypted with TLS.
- Credentials are stored hashed, and not even the cheese team can know the original values.
- Clip storage is private and can be accessed only through temporary signed URLs.
- Transfer codes expire after 10 minutes and become invalid after 5 failed attempts.
9. Use by children
The App is not intended for use by children under 13. If we find that someone under 13 is using the App, their account may be deleted.
10. Analytics and advertising
The App does not include any advertising SDKs or third-party behavioral analytics SDKs. Crash logs may be collected to investigate problems, but they contain no personally identifiable information.
11. Changes to this Policy
Any changes to this Policy will be published on this page. Important changes will also be announced in the App. By using the App after a change, you are deemed to have agreed to the revised Policy.
12. Contact
For inquiries about this Policy, please use the contact information listed on the Support page.
